Barloworld partners with Business Against Crime to address crime in KwaZulu Natal

World Class Engineering
Two-hundred police officers will have more time to combat crime in KwaZulu-Natal, following the launch of Business Against Crime KwaZulu-Natal’s Support Programme for Police Stations (SPPS) this month, where they will receive business, management and leadership training.

The programme, which has been successfully implemented in seven other provinces, aims to build capacity and enhance skills of police officers, helping them to run their stations more like a business. By introducing a business plan at police station level, as well as introducing a leadership programme, which deals with issues such as the development of subordinates, business writing, stress management and team motivation, SPPS seeks to improve performance and service delivery.  With private sector funding, Business Against Crime will train 8 000 SAPS members by 2008.

At a function at Barloworld Equipment’s new offices at Riverhorse Valley Industrial Park in Durban, says Kelvin Glen, Business Against Crime KwaZulu-Natal’s managing director: “Many police officers are not equipped with the necessary business skills needed to make stations accountable and efficient. This programme is designed to increase police stations’ productivity and equip SAPS members with management and leadership skills, giving them more time to combat crime. It also aims to positively affect service delivery, morale, teamwork, and to strengthen relationships between the community and the police, making stations more accountable to the public.”

“Sponsorship and support from the corporate sector is crucial for Business Against Crime to achieve its objectives. Together with government, and in partnership with the citizens of our country, Business Against Crime aims to make South Africa a safer place in which to live, work and do business,” Glen says.

Barloworld is contributing R500 000 per annum spread across to a number of BAC operations and has a representative on the SA board, contributing executive management skills to BAC endeavours in addition to this.

Says Jennifer Smith, head of Barloworld’s corporate social investment: “With crime affecting every aspect of our society and our economy and the immense human suffering that is being caused, combating crime and its causes is everybody’s business.”
