The high profile official launch of MACC, the Mastery Academy of Construction at CIDA will take place at CIDA Park in Lyndhurst on November 9th, hosted by Murray & Roberts and the Barloworld group together with the Board and CEO of CIDA City Campus. |
MACC, the Mastery Academy of Construction at CIDA, aims to give students the chance to pursue a career in building and construction. Murray & Roberts and the Barloworld group, which when the commitment was made included PPC, are the founding partners [having donated R1m each] who have supported the inspiration for MACC. Other members of the construction industry have also joined to support these great efforts to provide the best grounding in construction available in South Africa. In addition to students gaining crucial business skills in CIDA’s Bachelor of Business Administration degree, through MACC they will gain knowledge and hands-on skills in the science and art of construction, project management, building sciences, including eco-friendly building methods, and utilizing advanced sustainable technologies. Students also learn something special about developing happy, healthy and safe buildings. MACC began in February 2007 and has been a wonderful journey to date. Students have had the opportunity to learn from master builders, craftsmen and trades people. While the work is physically demanding, women are also encouraged to consider a career in the construction industry, and one third of the students enrolled are female. MACC is dedicated to building a strong future for previously disadvantaged South Africans. Students at CIDA City Campus come from 1000 cities, townships, informal settlements and rural areas across South Africa as well as other African Union countries. Scholars are selected on the basis of academic excellence, leadership ability and willingness to participate actively in the transformation of South African society. Strong English and mathematical ability are core requirements for acceptance. All students come from historically disadvantaged and economically deprived communities and are unlikely to have acquired tertiary education without scholarships to CIDA City Campus. |

Says Taddy Blecher, CIDA City Campus chief executive, a social entrepreneur of note: “CIDA realised something groundbreaking had to be done to open mass-scale access to higher education when we discovered that South Africa has a tertiary education rate of only six per cent of people over the age of 20. We also found that there is a 90 per cent correlation between the levels of tertiary education in a nation and its economic success.” |
| &ldquo25 October, 20070 per cent of its people go on to study after high school. For South Africa to enhance its globally competitive position it would need at least 12 – 15 per cent of our population to have some type of tertiary education,” said Blecher. | |
