The decision of shareholders to swop paper for trees paid off for the Alexandra community, after Food & Trees for Africa planted 80 trees at newly occupied RDP homes.
In support of its environmental philosophy, Barloworld, the international diversified industrial company, pledged R50 (the cost of a tree) to the ecological non-governmental organisation for each shareholder who selected the electronic delivery option – instead of receiving the printed copy of the company’s annual report.
Says Barloworld company secretary Sibani Mngomezulu: “Electronic delivery of information to shareholders is part of a global trend to cut down on printing material and paper usage, while at the same time speeding up the delivery process.”
Food & Trees For Africa, South Africa’s food gardening and greening NGO, used part of the donation to plant 80 trees in the newly developed Alexandra Ext 8, as part of the Alexandra Renewal Project Greening of Alex.
Mngomezulu added: “Everyone has a role to play in educating the people with whom we interact of the value of conserving the environment. The trees we will be planting today should serve as a constant reminder to all of us of the duty we have of educating our children to respect nature.”
Says Jeunesse Park, chief executive officer of Food & Trees for Africa: “Barloworld is setting a good example for other companies. By providing these trees, the company not only replaces those which would have been utilised in producing the reports, but is also helping to offset carbon emissions which cause climate change.”
Barloworld has been involved with Food & Trees for Africa since its centenary celebration in 2002, when the company committed itself to planting as many trees as it has employees. Since then, Barloworld has planted 23 000 trees in the communities in which it operates.
