THE MANDELA Barloworld Agricultural High School at Modjadji in northern Limpopo Province received 13 new computers and a broiler house from Barloworld Limited and The Land Bank respectively at a function held at the school late last month. The computers valued at R50 000 were donated by the Barloworld group, while the Land Bank provided the school with R60 000 for the broiler house.
Barloworld's CSI Officer, Ms Thuli Matlala, said the donation represented the group’s continuing development partnership with the school, which it built at the request of former President Nelson Mandela and a cost of R14 million and handed over to the Limpopo provincial Department of Education in 2002. According to Mr Charles Mampeule of the Modjadji Royal Council, Mandela had been approached by the late Rain Queen Mokope Modjadji V in 1998 to provide an educational facility in the area, and then asked Barloworld to assist.

Dr Moraka Makhura of the Land Bank said the donation of a broiler house was in line with the bank’s social responsibility programme aimed at fighting poverty and ensuring community upliftment. "The broiler house will offer training and capacity building to emerging farmers and the previously disadvantaged communities neighbouring the school," he added.
The school principal, Ms Phillipine Modika, who is a leading light in the community and has been with the school from inception, said the computers have enabled the school to offer computer applications and technology as subjects in grades10 to12. "Learners are exposed to all Microsoft Office applications, operational knowledge and computer aided design," she said. The broiler house would help to close the skills gap by training learners in poultry production. Learners and teachers had started various agricultural projects such as poultry and vegetable farming and the establishment of fish ponds. The produce from these projects was sold to local communities to generate funds for the school. She added that the school had already created nine jobs for local people who were formerly unemployed. Last year, Barloworld donated a brand new bakkie to the school.
"At Barloworld we believe we have the responsibility to ensure that young people receive opportunities to achieve their full potential," said Matlala. “This is one of several Barloworld legacy projects with which we have an on-going involvement.”
