
The National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA) maintains that sustainable social change to empower people with physical disabilities to operate and achieve their full potential in the mainstream of society can only happen through successful partnerships. Barloworld's partnership with selected organisations active at a national level in the disability sector is considered by those organisations to be emerging best practice in South Africa - and is set to deepen.
A particularly powerful example of this has been our work with the NCPPDSA, to which we donate funds, the time and efforts of a disabled employee to their policy, lobbying and advocacy initiatives, and with whom we engage on the formulation of our own policies and strategies to empower disabled people in our places of work and the way in which we do business.
A highlight of the NCPPDSA's past year has been training and empowering of young leaders with disabilities to represent the disability sector on various levels in business, civil society and the public sector. Young people from all nine provinces have also been trained to address work and employment issues and access as it relates to the built- and natural environment for persons with disabilities.
At the prestigious biennial conference of the NCPPDSA which took place on 11 and 12 March 2008 in Durban, Barloworld CSI Officer Thuli Matlala was both a presenter on the programme and made a further donation of R250 000 to the NCPPDSA through the chairman, Dr B T Naidoo, on behalf of the Barloworld group in South Africa.
